A Circle of Hope: How the Chang Family Found Strength Through Giving Circles

Life has been an uphill battle for Madam Chang, the sole caregiver for her 14-year-old son diagnosed with mild intellectual disability, ADHD, and autism, her wheelchair-bound husband, and her 89-year-old mother. On top of managing her family’s needs, she struggles with her own depression, brought on by the relentless pressures of caregiving. With no close friends to lean on, Madam Chang has faced these challenges largely in isolation.
In August 2023, hope arrived in the form of a Giving Circle —a compassionate group of five individuals determined to lighten her load. Together, with the help of their friends and networks, they raised over $18,000 to ease the family’s financial burden. But their support extended far beyond dollars. The circle members stepped in with practical aid, securing donations of essential items like adult diapers and a hospital bed. They visited the family regularly, not only to bring supplies but also to bring joy. They spent time with Madam Chang’s son, playing board games to offer her precious moments of rest.
But their impact didn’t stop there. Understanding the power of connection, the Giving Circle rallied to strengthen the family’s social support network. They painted the family’s home ahead of Chinese New Year, bringing fresh hope and warmth to their living space. They also celebrated milestones with the family, including birthdays, transforming ordinary days into cherished memories.
Through their collective giving, the Circle has become more than just donors; they have become a source of strength, companionship, and encouragement for a family navigating life’s hardest trials. For Madam Chang, this support is a reminder that she is not alone—and that even in the face of adversity, kindness can spark lasting change.
