From now till 31 July 2023, HCSA Community Services is organizing Everesting for Second Chances, a fundraising event to support former drug offenders in rebuilding their lives through the HCSA Highpoint Halfway House program.

Participants are invited to join a unique cycling challenge that tests physical limits while helping others reach new heights. Called #Everesting, participants must climb an elevation gain equivalent to Mount Everest’s height of 8,848 meters, using the STRAVA app to record their progress.

Everesting symbolizes the journey of ex-offenders reintegrating into society, with HCSA Highpoint serving as a basecamp for recovery and preparation. The event allows flexibility, giving participants six weeks to complete the challenge indoors or outdoors. It aims to support ex-offenders in overcoming obstacles and becoming contributing members of society. The inaugural Everesting challenge offers virtual and physical options, welcoming people of all fitness levels. All you need is a bicycle and STRAVA to get started.

This July, NLB is running Read for Books – a charity book drive aiming to raise awareness and promote reading among the less privileged. How does it work? For every 10 individuals who read for 15 minutes, one book will be donated to selected beneficiaries.

Participants can register their interest and read for 15 minutes at their own physical or virtual space. They are encouraged to take photos or screengrabs of the activity and submit them, along with the number of participants, by August 7th, 2023.

Alternatively, individuals can join Read Together programs organized by the National Library Board (NLB) and read for 15 minutes at the end of these programs.

The beneficiaries of the initiative include children aged 7-17 from less privileged backgrounds through the WondeRead initiative, children aged 4-8 from less privileged families through the kidsREAD initiative, and parents of children aged 0-3 from low-income families through the Ready to READ @ NLB initiative.
