If you’re a parent looking for a meaningful activity to do with your child during the school holidays, consider volunteering with STAR (Self-study, Tuition and Recreation), a children’s programme by Fei Yue Family Service Centre (Champions Way).

The STAR programme offers children from low-income families who are aged 9 to 12 a conducive environment to learn and play.

Every week, volunteers engage children in activities that promote academic improvement and good character such as tuition, games, art and craft and holiday programmes. While volunteering as a family, you can also join the parent-child bonding activities and parenting workshops.

After every session, I gain new experiences and feel really happy. Apart from tutoring the children, I feel that I am like a role model to them. Over time, I develop a bond with them and gradually gain their trust. I believe every small act of care and sincerity will leave a great impact in their lives. It is fulfilling for me to see them growing (simple acts such as learning to show their appreciation to other people around them) and opening up to me.

I like STAR because the volunteer mentors are kind, patient and help us with our school work. Through STAR, I have learnt to be polite and to persevere. I enjoy being able to make new friends here, too.
