A Career Rooted in Purpose

For Ching Su-Yin, the decision to join the National Volunteer and Philanthropy Centre (NVPC) was more than just a career move—it was a calling. Having spent years in marketing across the entertainment, media, technology, and MICE sectors, Su-Yin felt a strong pull towards the social sector.

“I recall vividly that I was looking for a new sector to contribute my marketing skill sets, especially in B2B marketing. In all my career moves, I have always give careful thought and ensured that it resonated with my values and desire to make a meaningful difference. I also knew that the next company I intend to join must have a soul.

Five years ago, Su-Yin took the leap, beginning her NVPC journey in Marketing and Advocacy. After three years in that role, she moved to Corporate and Industry Partnerships (CIP), where she continues to create meaningful impact today. The CIP team supports organisations towards corporate purpose adoption and operationalising their purpose across the five impact areas of ESG, People and Economic. We also work with organisations to scale their corporate social impact initiatives through sustained volunteering and donation opportunities.

A Warm Welcome and a Meaningful Start

First days at a new job can be nerve-racking, but NVPC’s thoughtful onboarding process made a lasting impression on Su-Yin.

“I recall my first day at NVPC—there was a slice of bread on my desk, along with my name card that read: ‘Su-Yin, Let’s change the world together.’ I was very impressed!

“The slice of bread was such a simple yet powerful gesture. It was there because HR understood that new joiners may typically be rushing to be punctual on their first day and may miss breakfast. That level of care and thoughtfulness truly moved me.”

It was in that moment that Su-Yin realised NVPC wasn’t just another workplace—it was a community built on empathy, purpose, and a shared vision for change.

Transformation and Growth

Over the years, Su-Yin has grown both professionally and personally. She has sharpened her stakeholder management skills, learnt the importance of communicating the WHY, and developed a strategic approach to scaling impact. Her time at NVPC has also reinforced the importance of clarity—ensuring that initiatives are well-defined to avoid adding complexity to an already intricate sector.

Among the many milestones in her journey, Su-Yin takes pride in leading the Champions of Good conferment virtually during COVID-19 with a two-person team, growing the Company of Good LinkedIn page from scratch, and transitioning from marketing to corporate engagement. What stands out most is her experience mentoring a teammate with mental health concerns.

“Supporting and building up a teammate facing personal struggles was incredibly meaningful to me. It reinforced the idea that work isn’t just about chasing KPIs—it’s about people, trust, and creating a safe space for growth.”

The Power of People and Purpose

Su-Yin attributes much of her growth to the people around her. From supportive superiors and colleagues to corporate partners who constantly push boundaries, she is energised by the people she interacts with daily.

“I am inspired by my teammates—my superstar team—who are highly passionate, committed, and hardworking. They try their best even when it’s daunting, present even when they’re terrified, and take on new responsibilities even when it’s uncomfortable. The trust and cohesiveness we’ve built are hard fought and invaluable.”

The Glow Up: From Glory to Glory

To Su-Yin, “The Glow Up” is about transforming from glory to glory—learning, re-learning, and giving her best. It’s also about being true to herself at work, and staying authentic in relationships with her teammates and corporates who have placed their trust and faith in NVPC’s work.

Looking ahead, Su-Yin envisions a future where NVPC and Company of Good become the first port of call for companies looking to contribute meaningfully to society and scale social impact. She hopes to continue working with a team that is not only passionate and supportive but also deeply committed to fostering relationships with corporate partners having their best interests at heart.

“There is more work to be done, for NVPC and Company of Good to be immediately synonymous with corporate social impact. Beyond the numbers, what truly matters is the trust we build and the relationships we nurture along the way.”
