From Food Waste to Wildlife: 3 Environmental Causes in Singapore & How You Can Help

Singapore’s small size makes us vulnerable to environmental challenges. Our food security, waste disposal, and biodiversity at risk – unless we chip in to sustainability efforts.

If you’ve wondered how to make our home cleaner, healthier, and more resilient for generations to come, here are three areas of environmental giving to explore on giving.sg that might inspire the eco-champion in you.

1. Food Waste: Because Good Food Shouldn’t Be Binned

In 2024, about 12% of Singapore’s total waste, or a massive 784,000 tonnes, was food waste, according to the NEA. Only 18% of it was recycled, with most ending up incinerated, adding strain to our waste disposal system. The rise in food waste over the years poses risks to both our food security and the environment.

Fortunately, organisations such as Food from the Heart are working to reduce our food wastage by redistributing excess food and promoting food waste recycling. Its Market Place programme channels near-expiry and packaging-damaged food that’s still good for consumption to community members.

Zero Waste SG also ropes in volunteers to engage the community and young students on building a zero-waste lifestyle at its outreach events.

2. Environmental Preservation: Weaving Conservation Into Our Daily Lives

From reducing waste to reusing everyday items, organisations are aiming to cut down Singapore’s environmental footprint through conscious habits and ground-up initiatives. Simple swaps such as reusable bags and bottles help, but so does supporting larger campaigns.

How you can help: Volunteer with the Singapore Council of Women’s Organisations as a New2U Thrift Shop minder, or be a DIY workshop instructor teaching classes in home repairs and woodworking for seniors at SG Cares Volunteer Centre @ Toa Payoh. You’ll get to promote a circular economy and waste reduction while building community ties.

3. Animal Welfare and Biodiversity: because the planet isn’t just ours

Our urban landscape is home to more than just people; otters, hornbills, and countless plant species thrive here. Biodiversity keeps our ecosystems balanced, but it’s under constant threat from habitat loss caused by development, and pollution.

How you can help: support Nature Society Singapore and the Garden City Fund’s educational and conservation programmes. You can also get your hands dirty as a volunteer gardener at nursing homes and day care centres, keeping these community hubs beautiful for users to enjoy.

How to get started as an environmental volunteer in Singapore

Right now, giving.sg lists volunteer roles such as outreach representatives and recycling drive and nature tour helpers that you can sign up for. So if you’re looking for a charity committed to conservation to help out with, start small and chip in with your time, skills, or resources to protect Singapore’s environment for future generations.
