Singapore is currently facing a historic recession as a result of COVID-19. With this, many face difficulties finding a job and job prospects are seemingly bleak. Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat commented that the “lockdown generation” may have their skills, employability and incomes permanently affected.
The uncertain job market after graduation may be worrying, but fret not, as there are plenty of opportunities and support available for you. Many institutions and companies are here to support you in your career journey.
If you require help in preparation to join the workforce, we have put together a list for you below.
1. Kickstart Your Career Journey with the Career Starter Programme
Resumes and interviews are important for your job search. Workforce Singapore has prepared a Career Starter Programme to help kickstart your career journey. The programme consists of a Career Starter Pack, Career Booster Workshop and Personalised Career Coaching.
The Career Starter Pack is a comprehensive resource guide that provides you with the necessary information that you need for your job search. Some of the information include interview tips, career guidance and financial planning.
2. Gain Industry Experience Through Various SGUnited Support Schemes
The SGUnited Traineeships Programme offers numerous traineeship opportunities across various sectors. You will gain valuable industry experience and receive a monthly training allowance, estimated to be between $1,100 and $2,500. The duration of the traineeship is up to 12 months.
To be eligible, you must have (i) graduated or will be graduating from the Institute of Technical Education (ITE), Polytechnics, Universities and other educational institutions in 2019 or 2020 or (ii) graduated earlier from above institutions and completed National Service in 2019 or 2020.
Some of the companies offering SGUnited Traineeships include: ST Engineering, TOP International Holdings, KPMG Services, Singapore Telecommunications
In line with the SGUnited Jobs and Skills Package, Workforce Singapore has organised a Virtual Career Fair that lists job opportunities with immediate vacancies. This platform allows you to interact with employers for interviews and access career-related resources. 3. Build Your Career Skills with Free Modules and Courses
If you would like to continue studying and learn additional skills, you can consider the Continuing Education and Training (CET) modules. You can participate in at least two free CET modules from your respective Institute of Higher Learning (IHL) in areas like Advanced Robotics, Data Analytics, Data Science, Finance, Professional Communications, and Systems Thinking.
To help you broaden your skill sets, you can also choose to sign up for a 3 to 6 month programme at your IHL to obtain micro-credentials or certifications. You can achieve this by stacking the complimentary CET modules. Visit your respective IHL to register and find out about the CET modules, micro-credentials or certifications.
Additionally, NTUC LearningHub has teamed up with GO1 to provide 100 free online courses. These courses aim to help you gain valuable in-demand skills and boost your employability. A wide range of courses is available for you to choose from, such as Data Analytics, Python Coding and Photoshop. Simply register for an account, and learn new skills in the comfort of your home.
4. Sign Up for the Skillsfuture Work-Study Post-Diploma
Fresh Polytechnic graduates can consider the Work-Study Post-Diploma (WSPostDip), offered under the SkillsFuture Work-Study Programmes. You will be matched with a job related to their discipline of study and undergo a 12 to 18 month structured training programme. Upon completion, you will receive an industry-recognised Post-Diploma qualification or professional certification, and potential wage progression or career advancement based on performance.
To be eligible, you must be a Singaporean or Singapore Permanent Resident who is within three years of (i) graduation from the Polytechnics or the (ii) Operationally Ready Date for full-time National Servicemen.
5. Get Career Guidance from MyCareersFuture or Your IHLs
MyCareersFuture by Workforce Singapore offers many opportunities for career guidance and advice. If you require guidance in personalising your career plans, Workforce Singapore’s Careers Connect Coaches can assist you in achieving your goals.
Alternatively, you can approach your IHL’s career offices or centres for additional support and advice.
