LEADERS’ LAB – Catalysing Board Performance

Following the overwhelming response to our first CNPL LEADERS’ LAB this year, a series of interactive forums by the Centre for Non-Profit Leadership, we are organising our second session this September. 

The informal format of LEADERS’ LAB encourages non-profit leaders and volunteers to share challenges and burning issues encountered in directing their organisation, and draw from the knowledge of the speakers to derive helpful insights.
LEADERS’ LAB sessions are followed by networking sessions where non-profit leaders from different sectors can connect, exchange and stimulate new ideas, relationships and collaborations.

What happened at the last LEADERS’ LAB?

• Does your non-profit have an Investment Policy Statement (“IPS”) in place for Reserves Management?
• Are there well defined investment guidelines and portfolio construction processes for managing the Reserves?

Our first LEADERS’ LAB for the year was designed to help non-profits answer questions on managing their reserves and developing their investment policies. Co-facilitated by Centre for Non-Profit Leadership and CFA Singapore Society, it interpreted the topics of Cash Management, Portfolio Construction, and Investment Policy from a non-profit standpoint.

Speakers included financial experts from CFAS like Joachim Toh Wen Keong, Deputy CIO, NUS,Tony Tan Head, Standards and Advocacy, CFA Institute, V Maheantharan, Director, Institute for Financial Literacy, Simon Ng, CFA (CEO/Managing Director, CCB International (Singapore) Pte. Ltd. And Edna Leong, erstwhile banker and Deputy Director, People Search, CNPL, who endeavoured to share experiences and recommendations and share advice on investment issues faced by the participants in governing their organisations.

In our upcoming CNPL LEADERS’ LAB – Framework for Fundraising, we have the pleasure of presenting Jane Binks, (fundraising professional, former Director of Philanthropy at the National Heritage Board, and Head of Fundraising at National Museum of Singapore) as our guest speaker. Jane will explore how to build a foundation for fundraising in the non-profit sector through Preparation, Commitment and Follow Through. The session will also include a panel of non-profit leaders sharing their insights, experiences and challenges in creating sustainable fundraising programmes and strategic partnerships.

ExpertMatch – Creating a #cityofgood, one project at a time

Every day our country’s Non-profits engage in a race for resources.

When they are not striving to raise the funds to mobilise projects, or getting hands on deck to serve their beneficiaries, they deal with the challenge of attracting employees whose expertise can help plan their organisation’s way forward, while remaining within the bounds of their ability to compensate.

ExpertMatch by the Centre for Non-profit Leadership (CNPL), is a programme that aims to catalyse the sharing of knowledge, experience and best practices of the private and public sectors by facilitating senior leaders and domain experts to volunteer their knowledge and time with non-profits.

ExpertMatch Volunteers (EMV) are experienced in the areas of Strategy, Talent Management, Organisation and Systems and/ or Leadership Development and provide thought partnership to non-profit Boards through coaching and strategy facilitation on short term projects.

Client NPOs vary in size and complexity, and their scope includes strategy development, advising on talent management, organisational change and restructuring, as well as executive coaching.

CNPL scopes and defines these projects with non-profits before matching them to ExpertMatch volunteers with the requisite domain knowledge, experience and availability to make the most effective use of their time together.

Who should volunteer?

You should volunteer for ExpertMatch if you have:

• Five years of professional experience in a senior functional capacity or client consulting.
• Time availability of 2 to 3 hours a week or 45 to 60 hours over 3 to 6 months for giving back to the community.
• The desire to practise creativity in resolving practical issues with high social impact.
