Balancing Work and Motherhood: Valerie Chia on taking guilt-free breaks

NVPC Groundup Exchange resize

At NVPC, we believe that caring for our people goes hand-in-hand with the impact we strive to create. One of the ways we support our employees’ well-being is through Take-A-Pause (TAP) leave. NVPC’s Take-a-Pause (TAP) leave grants employees two weeks of paid leave for every three years of full-time service. The intention is to encourage employees to step away from work, recharge, and return with fresh perspectives.

As Assistant Manager of Community Partnerships at BAGUS Together, Valerie Chia engages with ground-up initiatives, gaining first-hand insight into their work and challenges. BAGUS Together offers targeted support to ground-up initiatives at every stage of their journey.

After more than three years with NVPC, Valerie took the chance to step back, unplug, and be fully present with her family on a trip to Melbourne, Australia. As a working mum, she is no stranger to the constant balancing act between career and parenthood. Taking a dedicated break allowed her to enjoy intentional, uninterrupted moments with her loved ones—something she deeply values.

An Unforgettable Family Adventure

“I went on an unforgettable adventure to Melbourne with my little tribe. We hit the road to Mornington and journeyed down the breathtaking Great Ocean Road—singing our hearts out to favourite tunes, indulging in delicious food, exploring playgrounds and trails, visiting charming farms and wineries, spotting wildlife, and most of all, soaking up some truly special family time. It was everything I needed and more.”

Resetting Mindset and Well-Being

This pause gave Valerie more than just memories—it reshaped her perspective.

“Taking this time away had a deeply positive impact on my mindset, well-being, and outlook on life. It reminded me of the importance of slowing down, finding joy in the little things, and making space for rest.”

Returning to Work Renewed

When she returned to work, Valerie felt recharged and refocused. “I’ve returned with a clearer mind, renewed energy, and a deeper sense of purpose—ready to move forward with more intention and clarity. It reminded me that stepping away once in a while isn’t just a luxury, it’s necessary for long-term well-being and productivity.”

“Breaks are for recharging—take them guilt-free! Whether it’s for rest, adventure, or simply to be present with loved ones, stepping back helps you return more centred, focused, and energised. Life doesn’t slow down—so make the time.”

A Culture That Cares

Her experience is a reminder that meaningful impact starts with a healthy, supported team. By giving our employees space to recharge, NVPC nurtures not just their professional growth, but their well-being as individuals.
