Walk the Talk: Taking Volunteer Leave to Make a Difference

gbtb4

At NVPC, we don’t just talk about giving – we live it. As part of our commitment to growing a culture of giving, every employee is given six days of volunteer leave annually, empowering them to support causes close to their hearts.

One such example is Luke Phang, Senior Manager, Marketing & Communications, who utilised his volunteer leave to support KampungKakis – a ground-up initiative turned charity that addresses social isolation among seniors. It is also the organisation where his wife works.

“Ageing alone is tough, and as Singapore’s population ages, social isolation is becoming more common. Helping seniors age gracefully and fostering intergenerational bonds is something I truly believe in,” Luke shared.

The Vital Role of Volunteers

KampungKakis operates with fewer than five full-time staff, so volunteers are vital to their mission. Aside from befriending the seniors, which forms the core of the charity’s work, the organisation also relies on ad-hoc volunteers such as Luke to support outreach or engagement events.

One example is where he helped chaperone around two dozen seniors from Boon Lay to Gardens by the Bay – a day trip aimed at encouraging interaction between seniors and corporate volunteers.

His role involved ensuring everyone was safe, comfortable, and accounted for throughout the journey, providing directions, and assisting the seniors, many of whom were unfamiliar with Gardens by the Bay.

“It was heartwarming to see them enjoying the experience and connecting with volunteers,” Luke said. “There’s so much we can learn from our seniors – their stories, their resilience, and their joy.”

“Having this volunteer leave in NVPC provides us a wonderful opportunity to give back in our own little way, and I am happy to be able to do a small part in doing so,” Luke concludes.

Enabling Impact Beyond the Office

“At NVPC, we believe that purpose is nurtured from within. By providing six days of paid volunteer leave, we empower our employees to contribute meaningfully to causes they care about. It’s our way of supporting the giving culture we champion and recognising that every individual has the power to make a difference, both within and outside of the workplace.” shares Amy Teo, Director, People & Corporate Services.

This experience is just one example of how employees at NVPC walk the talk. Volunteering is more than just time spent – it’s about building meaningful connections, cultivating empathy, and strengthening our community.
