A team of 13 employees from the National Volunteer & Philanthropy Centre (NVPC) spent a meaningful afternoon volunteering at the Red Cross Home for the Disabled. Not only did they lend a hand, they also connected with both caregivers and residents through practical skills and heartfelt interaction.
This volunteering activity was initiated by Teh Wuan Xin from NVPC’s Corporate and Industry Partnerships team. “I wanted to do something special for my birthday — something close to my heart,” she shared. “We’re given six days of volunteer leave at NVPC, and as long as we plan a programme and get the necessary approvals, we’re empowered to give back in any way we want.”
The team put together an afternoon of activities that supported both caregivers and residents. This included a self-grooming class for caregivers. This was a practical session to boost confidence and promote self-care. It was designed to help caregivers feel their best and apply those skills when caring for residents. NVPC staff also lent a hand with the afternoon tea meal, providing support and companionship to the residents. Through simple, joyful interactions and music, NVPC staff brought smiles to the residents.
The grooming session was mooted by April Lau, Executive Volunteer Management & Fundraising at the Red Cross Home for the Disabled. “When NVPC first contacted me, I suggested we do something for our caregivers. Basic grooming is something they can take with them personally, and also apply when caring for our residents,” she explained.
The response from caregivers was enthusiastic. “The caretakers were really happy and excited,” Wuan Xin noted. “We had a very good turnout.”
Nichelle Ann Balinas, a healthcare aid, shared, “The session was very nice. It gave us more confidence and knowledge on how to take care of ourselves.”
April reflected on the larger impact: “Volunteerism brings people together. Everyone contributes a different skill set — every little bit plays a part in a bigger picture.”
At NVPC, we believe that everyone can give in ways that work for them, every day and everywhere. Whether it’s your time, talent, treasure, ties or testimony, every effort can make an impact.
