SHINE Children & Youth Services runs a reading programme (Reading Odyssey) for children aged 6 – 12 from vulnerable backgrounds who face learning difficulties. Here at Jalan Bukit Merah, children from lower-resourced backgrounds residing in rental blocks attend the programme. Supported by dedicated volunteers through weekly sessions, the programme provides a one-to-one guided support for the children, with the aim to improve overall reading and literacy skills.
Each session is filled with warmth and meaningful connection in every interaction.
Every week, Jane spends her time engaging the children through games, guiding them through reading practice and simple spelling exercises, and closing each session with a heartfelt moment of reflection.
“Seeing how much the children enjoy the session and benefit from the interactions motivates me to keep going,” she shares. Her impact goes beyond academic support.
“I feel that it helps create a positive and supportive environment for the children, fostering their personal growth and development. By being there for the children, I hope to make an impact on their lives and contribute to their overall well-being throughout their growth,” Jane says.
For Jane, volunteering doesn’t end when the session does. She believes in the power of sharing as a way to spark change and inspire those around her to start their own volunteering journeys.
“I believe it begins with sharing my own stories and the valuable insights I gain from volunteering, including the emotions and personal growth I experience. When someone expresses a desire to start volunteering, I get genuinely excited for them. This enthusiasm helps others feel encouraged, supported, and confident in their decision to give back,” she adds.
Her advice to new volunteers? Start small.
“Look for ad-hoc volunteer opportunities in your neighbourhood, or join a friend who’s already involved—better yet, start volunteering together!” Jane recommends.
And most importantly, be patient. While the desire to help is often immediate, charities and non-profits often need time to onboard new volunteers.
“Trust that the wait will be worth it!”
