What is it really like to work at NVPC? Mahdhir spills the beans.
For Mahdhir Mustaffa, a typical day at the National Volunteer and Philanthropy Centre (NVPC) begins before the morning rush kicks in. Sometimes arriving as early as 7.30am, he starts his day with a cuppa and dives into clearing emails before his first appointment. A simple routine that sets the tone for a day filled with meaningful work and purpose.
A Place Where Purpose Meets Impact
As Head, Marketing and Communications, Mahdhir and his team focus on driving public giving and ensuring that charities are seen and heard. It is a challenging space, with many competing brands, campaigns, and platforms. But the reward? “When you see the numbers go up, it truly means that someone somewhere out there who needs help, will be getting it.”
As someone who seeks to do something different and learn something new every day, joining NVPC was not just a career move – it was a calling. NVPC’s Corporate Purpose– Nurturing the Heart of Singapore – resonates deeply with Mahdhir. “It is clear as whistle what we are meant to do – driving heart work. And this is something I feel I need to do.”
An expansion of Mahdhir’s responsibilities in the last year pushed him to unlearn, relearn, and grow at a rapid pace. One of his memorable projects was also co-hosting the Un-Phil-Tered podcast in 2023 with his colleague, Grace. “Even though it was time-consuming, it was a great way to give our charities the platform to be casual and honest with what they do so that people can get to know their good work better. Is this a not-so-subtle proposal to bring Un-Phil-Tered back? Absolutely yes.”

Culture That Balances Heart and Hustle
Ask Mahdhir what makes NVPC a unique workplace to work in and he will tell you without hesitation: the people. He describes NVPC’s culture as a blend of candidness and results-driven focus. “There are two cultures running concurrently, the candid one where everyone can be relaxed with one another and a professional one where everyone is results-driven. I love how both cultures can co-exist at the same time and it gives me the assurance that everyone is here to do their jobs.”
Outside of work, Mahdhir also volunteers annually at the Operation Broken Wing, a regional charity fitness event with the purpose of bringing the fitness community together to raise funds for marginalised youth. This is just one of the many volunteer activities he does. His time at NVPC has also reshaped his views on giving. “Being in NVPC has definitely made me realise how easy it is to give, and that philanthropy, despite its assumptions, is actually meant for everyone.”

For those considering a role at NVPC, Mahdhir has this to say, “NVPC is a great place for you to learn about your capabilities and working style. It is a good gauge of grit and determination, so yeah give it a shot.”
