The annual President’s Volunteerism and Philanthropy Awards (PVPA), conferred by the President of Singapore, celebrates individuals, leaders, organisations, and communities who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to giving.
The Leaders of Good category recognises outstanding changemakers who have led, mobilised, and inspired others to dedicate their time, talent, treasure, ties and testimony (5Ts) to spread their positive impact in society.
Ooi Sze Jin saw a gap in support for individuals with moderate-to-severe intellectual disabilities and autism, particularly as they transitioned into adulthood. She founded A Kind Place in 2021 to provide mental health support and programmes that help individuals develop greater independence. Through its programmes, A Kind Place has supported over 300 individuals, including through its flagship Independent Adult Programme, where around 80% of participants progress to employment or structured placements. Sze Jin has since built a 25-person team and partnerships to extend its approach beyond A Kind Place. Her future plans include scaling the model through partnerships and technology to provide more timely and personalised support for individuals and their families.
Yvette Devi Chandra, President of the Para Cycling Federation of Singapore (PCFS), began her giving journey with a simple question: “How can I help?” Eighteen years on, she has grown PCFS from nine to 40 athletes, creating more opportunities for persons with disabilities to participate in para cycling and pursue their sporting aspirations. She has also built a strong community of coaches, caregivers, and volunteers who support and grow alongside the athletes. Yvette hopes to expand access to para cycling for more persons with disabilities while advancing her vision of Singapore hosting an international para cycling race, raising the profile of inclusive sports and athlete development.
